Top Resaurant celebrates 1st Anniversary

Restaurant 1861 at Cross Ash near Abergevenny right out in the boondocks, is well worth visitingOwners are Simon and wife Kate and celebrated their 1st year in business along with their 1 year old daughters birthday last Sunday .To celebrate the occassion I dug out my acrylic paints, burnt the midnight oil and created a 14 x 18 framed painting of the establishment, which we hope to see on display on our next visit.

Simon was the head chef, and Kate the wedding co ordinator at one of the venues that our son Bob does the wedding photography, as a result they have become good friends.Simon trained under the Roux Bros and Heston Bluemental so the food is quite outstanding, and by London standards a give away.

Workshop at Abbey House Studios 21st June

Despite the rain Sheila, Theresea & Brad arrived early to embark upon an entirely new experience, they readily admit to having a little nervous aprehension in undertaking a complete painting in just one day.

Bob Ross said 'It is not so much what you put on the canvas, but what takes place on the pallette'

So we spent some time mixing colours, loading brushes, how to keep the pallette knife clean, ( Saves Kitchen Roll) how to clean the brushes, so much to remember, but hopefully my unhurried approach and encouragement quickly settled the participants down to enjoying the days activities.

Coffee break and a chat sharing lifes experiences followed by getting down to preparing the canvas, in this instance having covered the canvas with a thin, and I emphasise THIN coat of Liquid White , we mixed Alizarin Crimson & Titanium White and again covered the whole canvas.

The sky followed with a mix of Prussian Blue and Titanium White, step by step, Clouds, Mountains, Trees, Bushes, highlights, and most important a signature followed throughout the day.

We did stop for a delightful lunch provided by Betty in the Conservatory, a welcome break from the concentration of the mornings activity.

All paintings were completed in good time with Theresa, Sheila & Brad very happy with what they had achieved, and a promise to come again to continue with 'The Joy of Painting'
